LONG ISLAND --Police say a former U.S. amateur heavyweight boxing champion has been shot and critically injured during a confrontation not far from his Long Island home. Adam Willett was shot once in the torso in the parking lot of the Miracle Plaza Shopping Center in North Bellport. Police are searching for the suspect and believe the incident may have been a botched robbery attempt.
Willett was in critical condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center.
He became the U.S. amateur champion in 2006. He was an alternate on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team in Beijing after losing in the trials.
