Driver charged with DWI makes fake pregnancy claim

SPARTA, N.J. Melissa S. Whyte of Morristown led officers on a chase through two towns Friday night before being stopped in Jefferson. She was charged with drunken driving, eluding and other charges.

The pursuit began in Sparta after a business owner told police the 31-year-old appeared to be drunk when she asked for directions.

A Sparta officer soon tried to stop her vehicle, but Whyte instead sped up and drove into Jefferson, where another officer joined the pursuit.

After eventually being stopped, Whyte said she couldn't stop because she was in severe pain from a difficult pregnancy, but authorities soon learned she wasn't pregnant.

They then discovered she was wanted in Clinton for failing to appear on another DWI charge and in Michigan on fraud charges.
