Woman sexually assaulted on UWS

He is now a suspect in a sexual assault on the city's Upper West Side.

"That's most unusual in this neighborhood. I'm surprised to hear that. I've lived here a very long time. This would be a first," one area resident said.

It happened Sunday, May 16 shortly before 3:20 in the morning.

Investigators believe the man seen in surveillance video pushed his victim, a 25-year-old woman, from behind as she was walking up a flight of stairs and then sexually assaulted her.

The crime comes as a surprise to some residents who say they've always felt safe In the neighborhood.

"It's very scary. It's frightening," said one resident.

Police tell us the suspect is a Hispanic man in his 20's. He's approximately 5'9" and 200-225 lbs., with short dark hair and a heavy build. He was wearing a tan baseball cap and a green t-shirt.

Investigators are hoping that description and the surveillance video provide the big break that gets the woman's attacker off the streets.
