Six hurt when bus overturns on Garden State Parkway

MIDDLETOWN The bus veered from the southbound local lanes, south of exit 114, at around 5:25 a.m. Wednesday.

The cause of the crash appears to be driver fatigue. The driver woke up when the bus rolled over the rumble strips as it left the roadway.

The driver attempted to swerve back onto the parkway, but he couldn't regain control. The bus veered into soft mud and tipped over in the woods.

Six people were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Five were taken to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank and one to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

The rest of the 22 passengers were put on another bus and were to be taken back to Lakewood.

The bus, operated by Darkanu Bus Company of Lakewood, was chartered by a group returning from a wedding in New Square in Rockland County.

The driver, 35-year-old Yechiel Bruzda of Brooklyn, had no comment leaving the state police barracks where he was questioned but not charged.

Police say the Monmouth County prosecutor is not pursuing criminal charges because the injuries weren't serious. Traffic tickets, however, are pending.
