ATM customers ripped off in Suffolk County

SUFFOLK COUNTY

Bank of America branches in Suffolk County are the latest targets of these electronic scam artists.

More than 50 ATM customers have had their accounts looted. p> 'Right now the estimates we have from Bank of America is about $217,000,' said Sgt. Steve Jensen.

Police say they're able to steal your bank card information using skimming devices that attach to an ATM's normal card reader, coupled with a hidden camera and blue-tooth technology.

"People are sitting out in the parking lot with laptops and essentially downloading the pin code information as you and I conduct our financial transactions," adds Deputy Inspector Gerard McCarthy.

So far, the electronic skimmers have been found at five Suffolk Bank of America branches in Medford, Shirley, Selden, Patchogue and Port Jefferson station.

Bank security cameras captured images of six suspects as they withdrew money using the stolen card information.

Bank of America is reminding its customers that they are protected against unauthorized transactions, but it's recommending customers regularly monitor their accounts and report anything unusual at an ATM.
