Michael Ricciutti and Karla Del Gallo asked a Manhattan court Thursday to order the broken branch preserved for their lawyers to examine, as a precursor to a potential lawsuit.
Six-month-old Gianna Ricciutti died after the branch fell on her and Del Gallo near the Central Park Zoo entrance Saturday. Del Gallo suffered a head injury.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said the branch appeared healthy.
City lawyers call the incident a tragedy. A zoo spokeswoman says officials there are thinking of the family and declined to comment further.
A message left with the Central Park Conservancy wasn't immediately returned. The nonprofit group helps maintain the park.
