The owner of an animal shelter is accused of trying to steal a pair of high-priced dogs, but she maintains she was trying to save them.Diane Indelicato, 46, owns the Ruff House animal shelter on Long Beach Road in Oceanside.

Police say Indelicato wound up with a shih tzu and a maltipoo after a resident brought them in when the dogs were found running loose.

When the shih tzus' owners asked for them back, police say Indelicato claimed they had escaped.

The dogs are valued at $1,800, police said. They were later recovered in New Jersey, where Indelicato took them to put the dogs up for adoption.

Indelicato claims that she was trying to save the dogs because she says they came into her shelter very neglected.

A photo of the dogs is posted on the shelter's Facebook page.

She is scheduled for arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead on Oct. 14,

The dogs are back with their owner.
