Funeral home offers safe rides for NYE

HAVERSTRAW, N.Y.

At a time of great need T.J. McGowan Sons Funeral Home is there to help.

They have been offering comfort and reassurance since 1879 in Haverstraw.

On New Year's night they are parked out front.

Help again stands at the ready for anyone trying to get home who chooses not to drink and drive.

"If we can save just one life this year, one DWI conviction, our job is well done," said Don Cranston, General Manager of T.J. McGowan Sons Funeral Home.

Cranston, along with several other drivers, offers to anyone who calls for a ride home.

Flyers for the safe driver program were handed out to many of the restaurants and bars that fill with revelers.

"They thought it was a great idea. It's also going to help them if anything does happen," Cranston said.

"I think it's a great idea. I think it's going to save lives and make people think about it at least," said John Settle, a Haverstraw resident.

The police support it too.

"It's an asset for us and it's a good community oriented thing to do," said Police Officer James McNamee, of the Town of Haverstraw Police Department.

Even though it was early, they already had a standing reservation.

"At three in the morning a private club here in the area. They reserved three vehicles so we will be driving," Cranston said.

Don says he would like to see this service offered in other communities.

"We would rather drive you now than later, which means let's give you a ride home, don't chance it," Cranston said.
