Man in Stonewall Inn anti-gay attack facing new charges

NEW YORK

Matthew Francis, of Staten Island, was arrested Tuesday after he got into an argument with a homeless man and allegedly assaulted him.

Police say Francis put up a fight, kicking one officer and punching the other.

He was being held on bail on charges of assault and resisting arrest.

Francis is awaiting prosecution in a Manhattan hate-crime charge. He was accused of yelling anti-gay slurs and taking part in an assault in the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village.

The Stonewall Inn became a rallying point for gay rights in June 1969, when a police raid sparked an uprising.
