Police say Zanaya Smith was playing on the sidewalk, outside her grandfather's house, when she suddenly ran into the street just before 8:15 p.m.
She was struck by a passing car, a dark blue SUV, near the intersection of 104th Avenue and 168th Place.
She was rushed to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in critical condition.
The driver, 53-year-old Kent Lowrie, was charged with vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated.
