Police responded to a 911 call of a woman stabbed inside 358 Legion Street in the Brownsville section at around 6:15 p.m.
Upon arrival police discovered Churminline Ward, 47, with multiple stab wounds to the body.
Ward was taken to Brookdale Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Her 20-year-old son was taken into custody at the scene.
Two of Ward's grandchildren, ages 1 and 5, were in the apartment at the time of the stabbing.
They were taken to Brookdale hospital to be checked out, but did not appear to be injured.
They are not the suspect's children.
The investigation is ongoing.
