Woman dies in horrific Manhattan elevator accident

NEW YORK

The incident happened at a building on Madison Avenue between 40th and 41st streets.

The FDNY says Suzanne Hart, 41, was killed when the elevator rapidly shot upwards while she was attempting to get on. She was then trapped between the first and second floors.

Two people who were already on the elevator were rescued. The 36-year-old woman and a man were treated for trauma at the hospital after witnessing the incident.

Hart's father arrived at the apartment where she lived with her boyfriend Wednesday night, as they share now the sudden grief of a heart-wrenching and unexplainable loss.

Investigators say it is too early to determine what caused the accident.

The building is the longtime home of advertising firm Y&R, which was named Young & Rubicam when it opened its doors in 1926. The firm will move to 3 Columbus Circle by the middle of 2013.

The investigation is ongoing.
