Lawyer in CT ambulance rape questions charges

HAMDEN, Conn.

Mark Powell is charged with first-degree sexual assault and unlawful restraint. Hamden police say the 22-year-old woman, intoxicated and unconscious while strapped to a stretcher Dec. 25, awoke to find Powell assaulting her. Police say she had fallen and hit her head at a holiday party.

Norman Pattis, Powell's lawyer, said in Meriden Superior Court Thursday that because the woman was intoxicated she could not identify Powell.

He also questioned the assertion by police that the 49-year-old Powell admitted to touching the woman and demanded an audio recording or signed confession.

The case will resume in New Haven Superior Court on Tuesday.
