LI homeless science whiz not among contest finalists

BRENTWOOD

A Long Island high school student who attracted national attention after it was reported she was living in a homeless shelter is not among the 40 finalists in the prestigious Intel Science contest.

The finalists were announced Wednesday morning. Ten other New Yorkers are among the contenders for the $100,000 first prize.

/*Samantha Garvey*/, an 18-year-old senior at /*Brentwood High School*/, was named one of 300 semifinalists earlier this month. She has since appeared on the "Ellen" talk show, where she received a $50,000 scholarship. Suffolk County officials also have arranged for her family to move from a homeless shelter to a house in /*Bay Shore*/.

Garvey also was invited to attend President Obama's State of the Union speech Tuesday night.
