The bikes aren't fixed in place. It's up to the riders to balance on three rollers that roll under the wheels of the bike. The goal is to race against the clock or other riders.
Rollers have been around a long time. Wooden versions were made in the early 1900s when bicycling was more popular than baseball. These days, roller racing attracts cycling fans.
There's one at Amity Hall in Greenwich Village. A sports bar serves as a stationary Velodrome, where standing in the front row seems to be a little precarious. Riders can go 500 meters in a matter of seconds.
