Prosecutor: Jersey City teen fatally shot half-brother

JERSEY CITY

No charges had been filed in the death of 12-year-old Hasson George as of late Sunday afternoon. Investigators are reportedly still working to determine what sparked the shooting and whether it was an accident.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said George was shot once in the chest inside the Jersey City residence early Friday night.

But a neighbor found the body on a sidewalk, where he was pronounced dead.

DeFazio said George was likely still alive when he was moved. But when that happened, who moved him and why still remains unclear.

Authorities have said that George was shot with a semi-automatic pistol issued to 38-year-old Shaara Green-Simms, who has worked at the county jail for 17 years.

DeFazio said the two boys have the same father, and the victim lived not far from the apartment where he was killed, but officials haven't said whether she - or anyone else - was home at the time of the shooting.

DeFazio said Sunday that an autopsy determined that a single bullet fired from Green-Simms' semiautomatic pistol entered George's chest and exited his back. But further details were not disclosed.
