Took a vacation, sort of

July 30, 2012

But what's so different about taking weeklong vacations is how a person in the news business deals with the news.

My family doesn't always like it, actually, they always let me know when they don't! – but these days with alerts and emails-galore, it's not that difficult to keep abreast of news, no matter where you are.

And so I did. Is it necessary to ignore the news of the day to truly be on vacation? I don't think so. And the truth is, I've never thought so. Just ask my kids. Getting away on vacation doesn't have to mean getting away from reality. And, yes, I know, I know, there are times when it's beneficial to totally unplug and be away from the news.

But we live on this planet, and to really get away, you have to space-travel.

And even then, you could, if you want, keep in touch.

I'm just sayin'.

So now I'm back. I was energized when I was gone, energized on vacation, and energized back at work. Perhaps I'm just an energized kind-of-guy.

That's the back-beat as we prepare tonight's 11 p.m. newscast. We'll have any breaking news of the night, plus we're at the fundraiser in the Flatiron district of Manhattan for Pres. Obama's latest trip to New York. No shocker, it's to raise money. Again. This time it's a $40,000-per-person event. Lots of money for donors but we're all paying the price in the form of traffic jams in Manhattan. We're on the story tonight.

Meanwhile, Mr. Obama's challenger, Mitt Romney, continues his overseas trip, trying to raise his international profile.

And word tonight that former Vice President Cheney will not be at next month's Republican convention in Tampa. He says he has a fishing trip in Canada to attend. A fishing trip. Seriously.

But Mr. Cheney will be in good company of those not attending: Neither President Bush or his son, President Bush, will be there.

We'll also have Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast, and Laura Behnke (in for Rob)

with the night's sports. I hope you can join Liz Cho (in for Sade) and me, tonight at 11.
