27-year-old Dominick Anderson allegedly beat his 62-year-old grandmother Beverly Holmes to death Wednesday morning inside their Harlem apartment building.
Police say Anderson then turned his anger on responding officers, striking one in the head with a plastic elephant trunk.
The officer was treated and released from the hospital.
The suspect is undergoing a mental evaluation.
He faces charges of attempted murder and resisting arrest.
