Woman falls through sidewalk on Upper East Side

NEW YORK

It happened at East 60th Street and 2nd Avenue at around 9:15 p.m.

The woman is said to have fallen into a hole about seven feet deep, into the basement of a building.

Rescue workers say the sidewalk gave way while she was trying to get out of the rain. Inspectors found a four foot by six foot slab of concrete, which was part of the sidewalk, had collapsed into a vault cellar in front of the building.

Further investigation revealed the steel doors leading to the vault were defective and a stair case leading to the first floor commercial space was loose.

EMS, Fire Department and Emergency Service Units all responded to the scene.

The woman had to be extricated from the hole.

On Saturday, a steel cover was place over the collapsed piece of sidewalk.
