Newark Liberty Airport getting 4 new taxiways

NEWARK

The taxiways will service the longest runway at Newark, which handles about 200,000 flights a year. The runway itself will be repaved and receive new lighting and electrical systems.

The Port Authority says three of the new taxiways will allow multiple planes to stage for departure at the end of the runway, reducing takeoff delays. The other new taxiway will allow arriving planes to exit faster and get to their gates quicker.

The Port Authority estimates it will save 30 seconds per flight.

Work is slated to begin in 2014.
