So many things that strike me about this anniversary and yet I keep coming back to just how young Martin Luther King Jr. was when he shared his dream with the country, and changed the course of history.
He was just 34. 34!
What he would have thought about what's happened in the past half century, about how the country has changed, about the keynote speech today being given by an African American President, and how, back then, so many blacks in this country were prevented from even voting.
Our Lori Stokes, whose father was a groundbreaking Congressman who founded the Congressional Black Caucus, is leading our coverage of the anniversary, tonight at 11.
Also at 11, the NYPD under fire again tonight, after a report by the Associated Press claims it's labeled some mosques as terrorist organizations. And that means that anyone who attends services there could be targeted for surveillance and investigation. Is that the way to do counter-intelligence? Our Josh Einiger is taking a closer look.
And we're looking at the latest poll in the race for New York Mayor, which shows that Bill DeBlasio has surged ahead – to 36 percent, with Christine Quinn at 21, and William Thompson at 20. One analyst suggested that New Yorkers may be feeling "Bloomberg fatigue." Quinn's support has remained fairly steady, in the 20's – while DeBlasio has been surging this month. Our political reporter Dave Evans is covering the poll, and the Republican primary debate tonight.
And we'll have the latest from Syria, where tonight it appears that if the U.S. decides to bomb that country, it will do it alone. The U.K. tonight bowed out of any military actions. What comes from bombing Syria and getting involved in a civil war? What happens if the U.S. attacks yet another Muslim country? Is there another way to ensure that innocent civilians aren't gassed and murdered? I'm just sayin'.
