The festival highlights the best in world cinema, featuring top films from celebrated filmmakers. It has long served as a guide to the masterworks of cinema and a forum for the artists who create them.

Opening the NYFF is Paul Greengrass's edge-of-your-seat thriller "Captain Phillips," which is based on the true story of the seizure of the Maersk Alabama cargo ship in 2009 by four Somali pirates.

On October 5, notable actor Ben Stiller's flick "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" will be screened. The comic fable is about an up-to-the-minute everyman who embarks on a worldwide search for the co-worker he adores, which becomes a journey of self-discovery and a recovery of his buried dreams.

Also, upstart filmmakers have their chance to get noticed at the fest, and even titles that have not played at the world's top level events receive some attention.

The New York Film Festival will take place on the Lincoln Center Campus.
