Trooper Mike Kleissler responded to the scene of an injured worker around mile-marker 90 on the Garden State Parkway and found the man bleeding profusely from a severe gash in his torso.
Apparently, a saw the worker was using had kicked back and struck him in the chest, opening a wound two inches deep.
Kleissler applied a substance called QuikClot to the wound and was able to stop or slow the bleeding enough to keep the man alive until EMTs arrived on the scene.
One EMT reportedly said the victim would have bled out and died had the QuikClot not been used.
The worker, a 31-year-old from Whiting, remains hospitalized in fair condition.
Officials say this is the second time in a week that troopers used QuikClot to save a life.
The other time was at a car accident scene near Exit 1 on the New Jersey Turnpike on September 18.
