Jersey City mudslide causes road closures

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey

Multiple units responded to Paterson Plank Road and Congress Street after the incident earlier Wednesday morning. OEM and Department of Public Works crews responded to the scene.

They were still working to clean up the mess early Wednesday afternoon, but officials hoped to have the work completed as soon as possible.

While the cause remains under investigation, the mudslide is preliminarily believed to be weather related. It was likely caused by water runoff from the heavy rains.

United Water is on site to aid the investigation. There was some speculation that a broken water pipe at the top of the hill may have been a factor. A spokesman says there is currently no evidence that was the case.

Paterson Plank Road was closed between Congress Street in Jersey City and the Hoboken border.

New Jersey Transit Light Rail has not been affected.
