A US Airways 687 Airbus bound from Newark to Charlotte was preparing to take off when the fire broke out in an auxiliary power unit in the back of the plane. The crew from another aircraft reported smoke and flames.
The aircraft self-extinguished the fire, and taxiied back to the gate.
The airport was closed for a brief time and reopened at 5:54 p.m.
Fire trucks sprayed water on the plane. There were no injuries.
The passengers stayed on the plane. There were 5 crew members and 150 passengers on board.
