Long Island mom accused of DWI crash with 3 kids in car

HUNTINGTON STATION

According to police, Sarah Knakal, 30, was driving westbound on E. Jericho Turnpike at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday when she struck a telephone pole in front of 967 E. Jericho Turnpike, and then struck a sign.

Knakal left the scene on foot taking her three children with her, police say. The children are ages, 5, 7, and 9.

Officers located Knakal at E. Jericho Turnpike and Cooper Avenue approximately 10 minutes later.

There were no injuries. The children were turned over to a family member. Suffolk County Child Protective Services were notified.

Detectives charged Knakal, 30, of Huntington Station, with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated With a Child 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra's Law), Leaving the Scene of an Incident and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
