Extra Time: Bronx collapsed building aftermath; daycare safety legislation
NEW YORK (WABC) -- In this edition of Eyewitness News Extra Time, we have the latest details on the building collapse in the Bronx, a new bill that aims to protect young children from getting sick or dying in childcare centers and a look back on the deadly Sandy Hook mass shooting, 11 years later.
Demolition began Thursday as residents anxiously waited to be allowed back inside their Morris Heights apartments to grab some of their belongings, three days after the corner of the building crumbled, sending people running for safety. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt.
Eyewitness News reporter Jim Dolan was at the scene with the details.

New bill aims to ensure safety at day cares across NYC
Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark is trying to make good on her promise to protect young children from getting sick or dying in childcare centers. Clark is teaming up with legislators to propose a bill to protect young kids from exposure to opioids in childcare facilities. It was three months ago that a toddler died from exposure to fentanyl. Darla Miles has more on what this means for child safety, and one of the sponsors of the legislation, New York Senator Gustavo Rivera, joined the show.
Lawmakers mark 11 years since Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre
Thursday was a somber day in the Tri-State area, but especially in Connecticut. Eleven years ago, a gunman unleashed a nightmare at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown. The gunman, armed with a semi-automatic rifle, inflicted the deadliest mass shooting in Connecticut state history. Six adults and 20 first graders, no older than 7 years old were slaughtered on December 14, 2012. Following the mass shooting, Connecticut lawmakers in 2013 passed new restrictions to the state's existing assault weapons ban. This past June, Democratic Governor Ned Lamont signed legislation banning the open carry of firearms as well as the sale of more than three handguns within 30 days to any one person, but many say more must be done to control guns and improve safety.
In fact, there has been no end to the gun insanity in America. There have been 631 mass shootings in the U.S. so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. That terrible tally could reach 300 school shootings by year end. We spoke with Congressman Dan Goldman for this week's edition of Up Close about the legacy of Sandy Hook.
Larry Doby honored with Congressional Gold Medal
In 1947, Larry Dobby became the second Black player to break baseball's color barrier. The following year, he led Cleveland to a World Series championship. Doby lived in Paterson, lettering at Eastside High School before moving to Montclair, where he lived until his death in 2003. He was a star in the Negro Leagues, playing for the Newark Eagles in 1946. He followed Dodgers second baseman Jackie Robinson into baseball's major leagues, enduring much of the same ill treatment.
As the first Black player in the American League, he overcame those difficulties to star for Cleveland. In 1948, Doby became the first Black baseball player to hit a home run in a World Series game as Cleveland won the title. After retiring as a player, he became the second Black major league manager when he took the helm of the White Sox in 1978. Doby was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998. On Wednesday, the pioneering force for Black baseball players was honored with the Congressional Gold Medal during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on what would have been his 100th birthday.
