Extra Time: Bronx building collapse possible cause; Giuliani trial
We have details on a possible cause of the partial building collapse in the Bronx, the verdict in a defamation trial against former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and a powerful storm set to impact our area this weekend.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- In this edition of Eyewitness News Extra Time, we have details on a possible cause of the partial building collapse in the Bronx, the verdict in a defamation trial against former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and a powerful storm set to impact our area this weekend.



City investigators offered some answers to questions that have been asked since the partial collapse of an apartment building in Morris Heights on Monday.



Authorities are now looking at an engineering failure in a support column that caused the corner of the building to come crashing down.



Eyewitness News reporter Anthony Carlo has the story from Morris Heights.

Powerful coastal storm threatens Tri-State area Sunday, Monday


A powerful coastal storm that will first hit Florida and other southern states will work its way up the east coast toward the Tri-State area, where it will unleash rain and strong winds for the second half of this weekend. It will be the second weekend in a row where a powerful storm will lash the region. The low-pressure system will race up to the north by Sunday afternoon and will deliver 1.5 to 3 inches of rain before it's all done. Unlike last week's storm, the Monday morning commute could be more complicated, with heavy rain still falling



Giuliani trial: Jury awards election workers nearly $150M


A jury ordered Rudy Giuliani to pay $148 million in damages to two former election workers in Georgia. They sued Giuliani for defamation over lies he spread about them in 2020. The damages verdict follows emotional testimony from Wandrea "Shaye" Moss and her mother, Ruby Freeman. They described becoming the target of a false conspiracy theory pushed by Giuliani and other Republicans as they tried to keep then-President Donald Trump in power, after he lost the 2020 election.


IDF says it mistakenly killed 3 Israeli hostages in Gaza


The Israeli Defense Force admitted that its military mistakenly killed three Israeli hostages during its ground operation in the Gaza Strip. An IDF spokesperson said the military believed the hostages had either escaped from Hamas or were abandoned by their captors, but soldiers misidentified them as a threat and opened fire. Yotam Haim, Samer Talalka and Alon Shamriz were killed. The IDF is investigating the tragedy.



Lights flicker across NYC, suburbs after substation short circuit


A small explosion at a power substation in Brooklyn momentarily disrupted New York City's energy supply. All across the five boroughs and even on Long Island and in New Jersey, people may have noticed their lights flickered on and off just before midnight. Eyewitness News reporter N.J. Burkett has more on the consequences of a short circuit.
