NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Surveillance video shows the moments leading up to a police shooting in Newark as officers drew their weapons on a driver behind the wheel of a stolen car.

It happened Monday on Hawthorne Avenue and Clinton Place just after 8:30 p.m.

Surveillance video appears to show the car in question stopped at the intersection when two Newark police officers in marked cruisers spotted the stolen vehicle.

One of the officers parked a cruiser at an angle in front of the car. Video shows the officers approach the car, get the passenger out and take him into custody.

But as they go out of view, another man, the driver, comes out of a nearby bodega and jumps into the passenger side of the car before moving to the driver's seat and trying to take off.

Investigators say officers struggled with him to stop the car, which then accelerated.

Officials say one of the officers opened fire, hitting the driver, before the stolen car crossed the intersection and crashed into an elementary school.

The Attorney General's office is investigating what happened. They say the driver was taken to the hospital where he is listed as critical but stable.

The mayor's office said the car was reported stolen in Connecticut and the two suspects are from Queens.

(Editor's note: A previous version of this story said a source reported the shooting was deadly, but New Jersey officials did not yet confirm the death.)
