WOODBURY, New York (WABC) -- A suspect who police say crashed a stolen car and fled from state troopers, leading to a manhunt and a lockout at multiple schools in Orange County, has died.

Police said after a confrontation in a densely wooded area off Trout Brook Road, an officer fired a shot that killed the suspect.

State troopers tried to stop a stolen vehicle driven by Ali, who is wanted by the NYPD in connection with several violent felonies.

Ali crashed the car as police were chasing him. The car burst into flames, and Ali fled on foot into a wooded area.

The crash happened Wednesday morning at Milepost 49, north of Exit 16, on the New York State Thruway in Woodbury.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were actively searching for him, and Monroe-Woodbury High School, Monroe-Woodbury Middle School, Central Valley Elementary and Smith Clove Elementary were placed on lockout status.

At about 12:35 p.m., Ali was recorded on a trail camera on Maplewood Drive in the Highland Mills area. State police released an image from that footage.

Authorities asked people in that area to shelter in police as the search continued.

At 2 p.m. state police reported Ali, whom police had described during the search as armed and dangerous, had been shot after a confrontation with officers.
