Jersey City police officers hurt in crash on Routes 1/9

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (WABC) -- A Jersey City police cruiser attempting to pull over a suspect crashed into another vehicle.

The cruiser collided with the other vehicle on Routes 1 & 9 at Duncan Avenue just after 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Two officers were taken to Jersey City Medical Center for neck and back injuries.

They were chasing a suspect who never stopped.

"I passed them, and I was cruising along going to work, I was actually, I had some time, so I was cruising, wasn't speeding or nothing," said Gene Jeffrey, who was in the vehicle that was hit. "He just never hit his brakes, all I had time to do was hit my brakes and close my eyes and basically wait for the impact."

Jeffrey says he was on his way to work when he saw the police cars pass him in pursuit. Moments later another cruiser joined in the chase, pulling out in front of him.

The crash left him shaken but not injured.

"They basically blind me, cut me off when I was going straight down 1 & 9 on my way to work, and I guess he just didn't see me. I don't know what but, he just never hit his brakes," said Jeffrey.

The police car ended on a barrier. Jeffrey's Mercedes was smashed in front and towed from the scene.

The vehicle Jersey City police attempted to pull over continued into Newark.
