3-year-old boy playing on sidewalk fatally struck by car in Hempstead

HEMPSTEAD, Long Island (WABC) -- A driver was arrested following an accident that killed a 3-year-old boy on Long Island Thursday night.

According to Nassau County Police, George J. Graydon, 31, of Hempstead, was driving a 2017 Dodge Challenger eastbound through the rear parking lot of 70 Maple Avenue in Hempstead at about 9 p.m.

The boy, identified as Qualique McDaniels, was playing on the sidewalk and ran out in front of the vehicle. The driver stopped and attempted to render aid.

The victim was transported to Mercy Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.

Police determined that Graydon was driving with a suspended driver's license and he was arrested at the scene.

Graydon is being charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
