Service on Amtrak's Empire line restored after boat hits Spuyten Duyvil Bridge

SPUYTEN DUYVIL, Bronx (WABC) -- There was confusion and delays on Amtrak in the Bronx after something in the Hudson River struck the Spuyten Duyvil Bridge.

The NYPD's Harbor Unit inspected the bridge in the water on Sunday night, as police tried to figure out from land what it was that hit it. Initial reports said it was a barge or a boat.

The incident stalled two Amtrak trains on the tracks, forcing riders to board a Metro North Train to get to Grand Central Terminal. It happened just before 4:30 in the afternoon, causing delays on Amtrak, and frustration for riders at Penn Station.

After inspecting the bridge for several hours, Amtrak officials determined that it was a boat that struck the bridge, however it is still unclear if investigators were able to locate that boat.

By 8 p.m., crews finished inspecting the bridge, and service was restored. Amtrak officials say riders should prepare for some delays throughout the night.
