Detectives noticed two small holes in Bownes' left forearm area, which he sustained before he was taken into custody on Staten Island.

So they decided to take him to the hospital to have the holes checked out, as well as for an overall evaluation.

The injury is not considered life-threatening.

The injury was sustained before Bowens was taken into custody in dramatic fashion in front of a Staten Island police precinct.

Police say Bowens is suspected of fatally shooting ex-girlfriend 28-year-old Catherine Donofrio inside her friend's Brooklyn apartment Sunday afternoon. The friend, Melissa Simmons, was grazed in the head by a bullet and shot in the arm. She was hospitalized in stable condition.

Authorities say Bowens resigned last year after being charged with drug possession and other offenses after he and another officer were accused of stealing cocaine and money to reward an informant for tipping them off.

Bowen's lawyer, Edward Mandery, said Monday morning that he's "both shocked and saddened upon hearing the allegations."

Bowens was in communication with police early this morning, and was en route to turning himself in when police spotted him one block from the 120th Precinct in Staten Island.

Believing he was armed and dangerous, police decided to take him into custody before he had a chance to surrender. They blocked his car with heavy police vehicles and officers armed with machine guns ordered him to the ground.

Bowens, who was unarmed, was walked into the Staten Island police precinct without incident. He was then quickly moved to a precinct in Brooklyn, near the scene of the crime.
