Woman accused of trying to burn ex's home

HEWLITT BAY, N.Y. Investigators say she intended to burn the house down with everyone inside sleeping.

Yitzhag Herschko says he can smile because his new baby, Chloe, makes everything better.

Today he's lucky to be alive after his estranged wife allegedly tried to burn their house down and kill all five people sleeping early Wednesday morning, including one of her own kids.

"We are doing very good. Thank God nobody got hurt and we can move on with our lives including Esther," Herschko said.

Police say his ex-wife, Esther Hershko, broke into his home in Hewlitt Bay Park and poured gasoline in his bedroom, but when she stepped outside to look for a match a neighbor had already called police. They reported a suspicious car parked in the posh cul-de-sac.

Meanwhile, the couple inside woke up thanks to their agitated dog

"They noticed liquid on the floor and attempted to mop it up. It smelled like gas and, at this point, police are at the front door,"

Herschko was arrested and charged with a number of crimes, including five counts of attempted murder involving her 25-year-old son and his 25-year-old cousin.

Also sleeping, her husband, his fiance and their 5-month-old baby, Chloe, who police say had traces of accelerant on her pajamas and bedding.

"We've been separated for five years. She will be okay, hopefully, and we will be okay," Herschko said.

Esther Herschko was ordered held without bail.

Police say the couple has been in a bitter battle over money.
