Husband kills ailing wife, police say

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. Paul Weinstein, 77, fatally shot his wife of over 50 years to keep a promise he made to her. She did not want to go into a nursing home.

Police say Weinstein shot his wife in the head while she lay in bed. Helene Weinstein, 71, had been in poor health suffering from dementia.

According to police, Paul Weinstein fired a Lugar-type handgun, and then called 9-1-1.

A high school directly across the street went into lockdown while Lt. William Childs spent nearly a half hour negotiating with Weinstein who threatened to kill himself. He eventually surrendered.

Weinstein worked part time as a pharmacist in Mamaroneck and called his boss shortly before this morning's shooting saying quote "it won't be long now."

Weinstein left work twice on Tuesday to return home to the Maple Center Senior Apartments. Neighbors say the couple was inseparable.
