Battle over Hempstead development heats up

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.

The plan being unveiled Monday by Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray could affect the $3.8-billion Lighthouse Project.

It could even raise questions about the future of the Islanders hockey team at the site.

The Lighthouse Development Group says the plan appears to be "economically unviable for both the developer and owner of the site."

Its statement was issued with Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano. He's been in talks with the Shinnecock Nation about building a casino on the site.
