The shooting happened in Newark Sunday morning after officers responded to a shots-fired call in Elizabeth.
Authorities say 30-year-old Anwar Crockett led police on a chase to Chadwick Avenue, where his car struck a pole.
An officer then opened fire during a confrontation. Crockett was hit multiple times.
Another person in the car fled the scene.
His condition has not been released.
