Backers of NYC Islamic center apply for grant

NEW YORK

A spokesman for Sharif El-Gamal, the real estate developer planning the center, confirmed Monday that his nonprofit group, Park51, has applied for a grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corp.

The grant would fund social services run out of the center, including planned domestic violence prevention programs, classes in Arabic and other foreign languages, and services for homeless veterans.

The LMDC says it is reviewing hundreds of applications from groups wanting some of about $17 million in federal funding for neighborhood programs.
