The 89-year-old man was walking with a cane crossing at 21st Avenue and 31st Street in Astoria, Queens when a black Mercedes SUV hit him.
Police say the driver stayed at the scene, but was arrested after a breathalyzer test.
The victim was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced.
Neighbors say he's a sweet, feisty man who lived in the neighborhood for 50 years.
