Con Edison, union meets Thursday amid lockout

NEW YORK

Talks were scheduled to resume Thursday afternoon, while the picket lines in New York's Union Square grow.

Pressure is mounting on both sides to resume negotiations after they failed last weekend. On Thursday, the company put out a full page ad blasting the union.

Con Edison managers have replaced union workers in the field with managers. The utility says two managers have been hurt while doing that work.

Union spokesman John Melia says the company's safety record was "perfect" for two years prior to the talks.

A spokesman for Con Edison, Alan Drury, says it's dangerous work and injuries can happen to anyone.
