Schumer: Veterans Administration should pay for service dogs

NEW YORK

Schumer says veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems should get /*Veterans Administration*/ benefits for service dogs. He also says that the administration is moving to restrict the benefits to those with physical disabilities.

On Sunday, veterans with dogs talked about how the animals helped them.

"I kept myself isolated - by getting Lizzie last year, I can get out now," said retired Army Staff Sergeant Leslie Wohlfeld

The Veterans Administration says it is researching how the dogs help people cope with PTSD and other mental health issues.

Senator Schumer believes until the study is complete, a veteran's doctor should decide if the dogs are helpful.
