Newark settles suit over filming of police

NEWARK Khaliah Fitchette had accused police of illegally seizing her phone and deleting the video.

The young woman was a high school student at the time. She's now a sophomore at Cornell University.

Details of the settlement were not released, and Newark police did not respond to a request for comment.

But the ACLU notes Newark police put out a memo a year ago stating police can only stop public filming of police activities if it interferes with law enforcement operations.

Fitchette says it's important for everyone to know their rights and she's glad the case is behind her.
