Ulanda Williams, who according to the New York Post is 6'5" and 400 pounds told the newspaper that the seven-foot fall may have killed a smaller person. The buildings department says structural defects may have caused the concrete to collapse on Friday night.
Williams is said to have fallen into a hole about seven feet deep into the basement of a building on East 60th Street and 2nd Avenue, into the basement of a building, and was released from the hospital on Saturday.
Rescue workers say the sidewalk gave way while she was trying to get out of the rain. Inspectors found a four foot by six foot slab of concrete, which was part of the sidewalk, had collapsed into a vault cellar in front of the building.
Further investigation revealed the steel doors leading to the vault were defective and a stair case leading to the first floor commercial space was loose.
