"If it wasn't for them, I think out roof would collapse, it's so bad," said Amelia Curtis, a /*Union Beach*/ resident.
It was beat up by Sandy's winds while bay water flooded the inside.
"My God, it was like rapids three or four feet high," said Frank Curtis, a Union Beach resident.
Insurance covered the floors, but gave the 80-something-year-old couple no money for the roof.
"I was devastated, they didn't care. They didn't do a darn thing," Amelia Curtis said.
But some other people stepped in to help.
First, the Old Bridge Rotary Club raised $8,000 for supplies.
"The credo is service above self; this illustrates that," said Phil Horowitz, Rotary Club member.
"It's a good feeling, a good feeling that we're able to do that," said Joe Vollmann, Rotary Club member.
Then, the labor was done courtesy Elam Fisher and Christian Aid Ministries volunteers.
"We started on the roof and had 14 people up there yesterday," Fisher said.
Elam and his crew are working on 50 some homes in the storm ravaged region, and all their work, everything, is free.
"Out of the love of our hearts. Jesus said, 'Love one another as ourselves,'" Fisher said.
"They ask you in Rotary, what's the moment for you? This is it. This would be my moment," said Glenn Davis, Rotary Club member.
The Curtis's, who are as handsome now, as they were in '58, are the receivers of much love.
"These people came to our aid. God Bless them. I owe them my life," Amelia Curtis said.
