The victim landed on top of the elevator at 1971 Webster Avenue in the West Bronx around 4:30 a.m.
He fell one floor and suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries.
Rescue teams worked to pull the man, a resident of the building, out of the shaft.
He fell from the second floor to the first.
He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital.
The cause of the fall is under investigation.
