Elderly woman struck by SUV in Long Island mall parking lot

HUNTINGTON STATION, New York

The accident happened between Bloomingdales and the Cheesecake Factory at the mall on Walt Whitman Road at about 1:30 p.m.

Sources are calling it a case of road rage, saying the victim and an 84-year old man were fighting over a handicapped parking space.

The woman and her sister-in law had been dropped off, saw the space and tried to save it for the person who just dropped them off.

That's when the 84-year old man in a Honda SUV tried to take the same space, and apparently ran one of the women down.

She was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center with a head injury and a compound leg fracture. She is expected to survive her injuries.

One witness said he heard the driver yelling out the window, 'Get out of the way', pulled in and ran the woman over.

Neither the driver or the victim have been identified. Charges have not yet been announced.

Investigators spent the night interviewing the 84-year old. The Suffolk DA's newly formed vehicular crimes unit waswaiting for a search warrant for the black box in his car to find out how fast he was driving, and if he actually was aiming for his parking space rival.
