65-year-old man walking with cane killed in Bronx hit-and-run

MORRIS PARK, Bronx (WABC) -- Police are looking for the driver of a van after a man was killed in a hit-and-run in the Bronx late Tuesday.

The incident happened around 9:15 p.m. at Bronxdale and Barnes avenues in the Morris Park section.

Surveillance video from a nearby business captured the horrific moments witnesses saw play out on the street, as the 65-year-old victim was left to die by the driver of a dark-colored van or SUV who kept on going.

"My wife screamed," witness Glenn Garcia said. "We heard the commotion."

The video shows the victim walking with a cane in the street moments before he was struck, sending him flying through the air and into a dark green Honda Odyssey traveling in the other direction.

"I just happened to turn around in the right moment, and I seen a man and a dark green minivan try to stop quickly," witness Justin Lopez said. "And then I had a bad feeling, and all I heard was a loud noise and seen a man fly in the air."

The driver of the second vehicle, a 33-year-old woman, stayed at the scene.

"He was unconscious, wasn't in good shape," Garcia said. "I felt a weak pulse."

The victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where he later died. Police returned to the scene, looking for evidence and hoping to find the driver who fled the scene and is now on the run.

"It's sad," Garcia said. "You think people have better morals. When you take off like that, it's not right."

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact police.
