NEW HAVEN (WABC) -- A high-rise fire in Connecticut left one person dead and injured several others early Wednesday.

The fire started just before 5 a.m. on the sixth floor of the University Towers on York Street, near the Yale campus, in New Haven.

The smoke rose all the way to the top of the 17-story building.

Crews had to use ladders and a cherry picker to rescue residents from balconies.

Fire Chief Allyn Wright says three residents had to be transported to the hospital with burns or smoke inhalation, and a male victim later died. Two firefighters also were treated for minor injuries.

Wright says 35 firefighters responded and put the fire out.

Several streets in the area were closed to give authorities access to the building, and the building's residents remained outside Wednesday morning.
