MOUNT VERNON -- Firefighters in Mount Vernon spent hours battling a three-alarm fire that broke out Monday morning at a bakery along a commercial and residential strip.
Police say plumes of gray smoke could be seen a long distance away.
The fire broke out before 7 a.m. on the corner of 12th Avenue and Third Street and quickly spread, gutting most of the building.
The blaze was in a one story commercial building at a bakery wholesaler, Artuso Pastry, where flames were coming through the roof.
One firefighter suffered a minor injury when he was hit with a ladder.
Authorities say the fire appears to have started in the boiler room, and is not considered suspicious.
